Meta’s Goal: Automated Room Scanning for Mixed Reality

It seems that Meta’s goal is to develop technology that can automatically scan a room and create a 3D model of it for use in mixed-reality applications. This would allow virtual objects to interact with the physical environment in a more realistic way, without requiring the user to manually mark out the boundaries of the room and objects. Meta has stated that it hopes to achieve this using state-of-the-art computer vision techniques, which have been demonstrated in research papers and smartphone apps, but may be challenging to implement on a headset with limited processing power. If successful, this technology could enable the development of more affordable mixed reality headsets in the future.
